Biography of Konstantin Grishchenko

Konstantin Ivanovich Grishchenko is a Ukrainian statesman who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine from September 2003 to February 2005. He was born on October 28, 1953.

Early Career

Grishchenko began his career in 1976, working as a staff member at the United Nations Secretariat in New York. He held various positions in the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1981 to 1990.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

In 1990, Grishchenko moved to work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anatoly Zlenko. He served as the Head of the Arms Control and Disarmament Department from 1993 to 1994 and as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine in charge of arms control and disarmament, European security, and cooperation within the CIS from 1995 to 1998.

Ambassadorial Positions

Grishchenko was appointed as the Ambassador of Ukraine to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg in 1998. He also served as the Head of the Ukrainian Mission to NATO. From 2000 to 2003, Grishchenko held the position of Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States.

Minister of Foreign Affairs

On September 2, 2003, Grishchenko was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine by President Kuchma. However, he was removed from this position in February 2005.

Later Career

After his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Grishchenko worked as an advisor on international affairs in the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine from August 2006 to December 2007. He also served as a Member of Parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the opposition government from December 2007 to April 2008. In April 2008, he became the First Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

Ambassador to Russia

In June 2008, Grishchenko was appointed as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

Awards

Grishchenko has been honored with the Order of Merit of the second and third degrees. He has also received honorary certificates from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 2001 and 2003. Grishchenko is fluent in English and French.
