Nikola Zhekov
Early Life and Military EducationNikola Zhekov was born in 1867 in the village of Gaitaninovo, Bulgaria. In 1885, he volunteered for the Serbo-Bulgarian War, and in 1887, he graduated from the Sofia Military School.
Military Career
Zhekov served in artillery units of the Bulgarian army. In 1897, he completed his education at the Military Artillery College in Vienna. From 1901, he served as military attaché in Austria-Hungary and later in Russia.
Balkan Wars
During the First Balkan War, Zhekov was chief of staff of the 3rd Army. He served as a military advisor to the Bulgarian delegation at the London peace negotiations following the war. He also participated in the Second Balkan War.
World War I
In April 1915, Zhekov was appointed commander of the 7th Infantry Division. With Bulgaria's entry into World War I, he became chief of staff of the Bulgarian army. He endeavored to maintain an independent policy in military matters, which often led to conflicts with the German command.
Death
General Zhekov died in August 1916, while the Bulgarian army was conducting a major offensive on the Saloniki Front.
