Early Life and Career

Kaloyan Stefanov Mahlyanov was born on February 19, 1983, in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. Before entering the world of sumo, he excelled in Greco-Roman wrestling, becoming a European junior champion at the age of 14. However, his weight exceeding 120 kg eventually forced him to abandon his wrestling career.

Sumo Journey

In 2002, Mahlyanov embarked on his professional sumo career as a rookie in the lowest division. He rapidly progressed through the ranks, earning the title of "Ozzeki" in 2006. This made him the first European-born Ozzeki and the first from outside Asia.

Stardom and Low Points

Despite his impressive start, Mahlyanov's performances fluctuated. He held the Ozzeki title for several tournaments without winning an Emperor's Cup, becoming the only Ozzeki to do so for over two years. However, in May 2008, he achieved a breakthrough by winning the Imperial Cup.

Physical Attributes and Style

Kotooshu possessed exceptional physical attributes for a sumo wrestler. Standing at 2.03 m (6 ft 8 in) and weighing around 150 kg, he had a distinct advantage in grappling and throws. However, his height also made him more susceptible to being pushed out of the ring by smaller and more agile opponents.

Marriage and Personal Life

In February 2010, Kotooshu married 30-year-old Japanese woman Asako Ando. They welcomed a son in late 2011. Kotooshu has also been active in promoting Bulgarian-Japanese relations and was awarded the Order of Stara Planina, 1st degree, in July 2009 for his contributions.
