Early Life and Education
Krista Mikkonen was born in Hamina, Finland, on November 15, 1972. She completed high school in Kouvola in 1999 before moving to Joensuu. In 2003, Mikkonen graduated with a Master's degree in philosophy from the University of Eastern Finland, majoring in biology. Her educational background also includes exchange programs in Florida and at the University of Namur in Belgium.
Political Involvement
Mikkonen's political career began in 1997 when she joined the Joensuu City Council. She was re-elected in 2005 and became a member of the city government from 2005 to 2012. She also served on the North Karelia Regional Council from 2009 to 2012 and as its Deputy Chair from 2013 to 2017. Additionally, Mikkonen held the position of Second Deputy Chair of the North Karelia Regional Government from 2017 to 2019.
Parliamentary Career
In 2015, Mikkonen entered the Finnish Parliament as a Green Party member representing the North Karelia constituency. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Second Vice Chair of the Green Party parliamentary group in 2015 and its Chair from 2016 to 2019.
Government Service
In 2019, Mikkonen was appointed as the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change in the Rinne Cabinet. She continued in this role in the Marin Cabinet until 2021. In November 2021, she was elected as the Minister of the Interior by the Green Party parliamentary group and party delegation, taking over from Maria Ohisalo on maternity leave. President Sauli Niinistö officially appointed Mikkonen to the position on November 19, 2021.
