Early Life and Family Background

Kristin Heaston was born on November 23, 1975, in Walnut Creek, California. Her father, Steve Heaston, was the water polo coach at the University of California, Berkeley, and an assistant coach for the 1988 Olympic silver medal-winning water polo team. Despite her father's athletic accomplishments, Americans have not won an Olympic medal in water polo since 1988.

Athletic Beginnings

Heaston began her athletic career early on. She graduated from Ygnacio Valley High School in 1993 and attended Diablo Valley College before completing her education at the University of Florida in 1998. Prior to 1998, Heaston had not achieved notable results, typically finishing in the lower half of competitions.

Breakthrough and International Debut

A turning point came in 2001 when Heaston began making significant strides in her career. She placed third in the US National Championships in both 2001 and 2002 before finally claiming the national title in 2003. That same year, she made her international debut but suffered a setback just six weeks before the World Championships, breaking her right foot and failing to advance beyond the qualifying round.

Olympic Debut and Success on the World Stage

Heaston made her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games but was eliminated in the qualifying competition due to both mental and technical challenges. However, she rebounded in 2005, reaching the semifinals of the World Championships and winning the Payton Jordan US Open. That year, she was one of the most successful female track and field athletes in the United States.

Continued Success and Preparation for Beijing

In 2006, Heaston finished second at the USA Indoor Championships and seventh in the World Athletics Final. At the 2007 Pan Am Games, she placed seventh. As a three-time national champion, Heaston secured her spot on the Olympic team long before the trials and will compete in women's shot put at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Kristin Heaston is currently a member of the Nike club and is coached by Jerry Clayton. Her success has continued, as she seeks to make a strong showing at the 2008 Olympics and contribute to Team USA's medal count.
