Career Highlights and 'All-Belgian Final'

In 2005, Vliegen reached the second round of the French Open. The following year, he reached the semi-finals of the Chennai Open and the final of the ATP tournament in Munich. This was the first 'all-Belgian final' in the men's singles event, as Vliegen faced fellow countryman Olivier Rochus.

Continued Grand Slam Success and Decline

In 2006, Vliegen competed in all four Grand Slams. He reached the third round of the Australian Open, his best performance at a major tournament. He also reached the third round of the French Open in 2007. However, his results declined in subsequent years, and he only twice reached the second round of a Grand Slam after 2007—at the Australian Open in 2008 and Wimbledon in 2009.

Later Career and Retirement

Vliegen's final Grand Slam appearance was at the Australian Open in 2010, where he was defeated in the first round. After that, he did not compete in any more Grand Slam tournaments. Vliegen retired from professional tennis in 2013.
