Biography of Krisztina Egerszegi
Early Life and Olympic DebutKrisztina Egerszegi, a Hungarian swimmer specializing in backstroke and individual medley, was born on August 16, 1974 in Budapest. She started swimming at a young age and showed such exceptional talent that she was included in the Hungarian Olympic swimming team at the age of 14 for the 1988 Olympic Games held in Seoul. At the Olympics, the unknown young athlete surprised experts by winning the 200-meter backstroke event, defeating the favorites from East Germany. She also finished second in the 100-meter backstroke, only behind the famous German swimmer Kristin Otto, who won six gold medals at the Games. Egerszegi became the youngest Olympic champion in swimming history. Her nickname "the Mouse" was given to her due to her surname (Egér means mouse in Hungarian) and her small size. At the Seoul Olympics, she weighed only 45 kg, 19 kilograms less than her lightest competitor.
Career Peak
The peak of Egerszegi's career came in 1991-1992. In 1991, she won both backstroke events at the World Championships in Perth, Australia. At the European Championships in Athens, she won three gold medals, including the 400-meter individual medley in addition to her backstroke victories. In her signature backstroke event, she set two world records: 1:00.31 in the 100-meter and 2:06.62 in the 200-meter. The latter record stood for 16 years and was only broken in February 2008. Egerszegi also competed in these three distances at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, winning all of them and setting Olympic records in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke events. She became one of the three triple Olympic champions at these Games, alongside swimmers Evgeny Sadovyi from the Unified Team and Nicole Haislett from the United States. Egerszegi's achievement was remarkable as she was the only one to win three gold medals in individual disciplines.
Olympic Legacy
At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Krisztina Egerszegi once again won the 200-meter backstroke, becoming a five-time Olympic champion and the only female athlete in history to win this event at three consecutive Olympic Games. She finished third in the 400-meter individual medley. Egerszegi was later inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and was awarded the Olympic Order for her outstanding achievements.
