Krzysztof Piotr Stanowski: Polish Scout and Social Activist
Early Life and EducationKrzysztof Piotr Stanowski was born in Lublin, Poland. In 1983, he graduated with a degree in history from the Catholic University of Lublin.
Scouting and Opposition Activities
In the early 1980s, Stanowski co-founded and led the Independent Scouting Movement (NSPS), the first independent scouting organization in post-war Poland. After the imposition of martial law in Poland, he became an activist in the underground structures of NSPS "Solidarity," serving on the Provisional Coordinating Commission in the Central-Eastern region from 1982-1984. As an editor of the underground Independent Scouting Publishing House and the magazine "Brotherly Word," Stanowski faced political repression and detention multiple times.
The Post-Communist Era
In 1989, Stanowski co-founded the Union of Scouts of the Republic of Poland (ZHR), serving as its first leader and later as its general secretary. He played a role in the establishment of the "Education for Democracy" foundation and served as its president from 2001-2007.
Global Engagements
Stanowski conducted training workshops and seminars on civic education and nonprofit work in Poland, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Mongolia. He collaborated with youth organizations in Ukraine and supported the creation of the Federation of Polish Organizations in Ukraine. He also co-founded the "Group Abroad," a federation of Polish NGOs operating beyond Poland's borders.
Government Service
From 2007-2010, Stanowski served as Deputy Minister in the Polish Ministry of National Education. In 2010-2012, he held the position of Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for development cooperation. He drafted a law on development cooperation and signed an inter-institutional agreement on global education.
Ukrainian Aid and Polish-Ukrainian Relations
Stanowski played a significant role in organizing Polish aid to Ukraine, particularly supporting medical services during the Euromaidan protests and providing assistance to internally displaced persons. He initiated and co-signed several appeals for solidarity with Ukraine and co-founded the Civil Solidarity Committee with Ukraine in 2014. He has been an advocate for Polish-Ukrainian dialogue and cooperation.
Later Career
In 2017, Stanowski became the director of the Center of International Cooperation in the City of Lublin Administration. He is currently a member of the Polish-Ukrainian Dialogue Group and a participant in the Polish-Ukrainian Partnership Forum.
