Born on March 17, 1832, in Corydon, Indiana, Walter Gresham was destined for a life of distinction in both politics and military affairs.
Early Life and Education
Gresham's father, Colonel William Gresham, provided a solid foundation for his son's education. After attending Corydon Academy and Indiana University Bloomington, Gresham embarked on a legal career, being admitted to the bar in 1854.
Political Beginnings
Gresham's early political involvement included serving as a press aide for the Republican Party in the 1856 presidential election. In 1860, he was elected as a Republican candidate to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Civil War Service
The outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 marked a significant turning point in Gresham's life. He raised and commanded the 53rd Indiana Infantry Regiment and participated in the Siege of Vicksburg in 1862. His bravery and leadership were recognized with a promotion to the command of federal forces in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1863. By 1864, Gresham commanded the 17th Army Corps and was breveted major general in 1865.
Post-War Career
After the war, Gresham pursued a career in law and finance. He served as a judge and was appointed as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Chester A. Arthur. In 1884 and 1888, he ran unsuccessfully for the presidency.
Secretary of State
In 1892, President Grover Cleveland recognized Gresham's diplomatic and administrative abilities by appointing him U.S. Secretary of State. As secretary, Gresham pursued policies aimed at expanding U.S. influence abroad and resolving international disputes.
Legacy
Walter Gresham's career was cut short when he died in office on May 28, 1895. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of service and statesmanship. Gresham remains an esteemed figure in American history, remembered for his contributions to both military and political realms.
