Early Life and Family

Omri Ronen, born Imre Sörényi, came into the world in Odessa, Ukraine, to Hungarian Jewish parents. His father, Emmerich Sörényi, a renowned Hungarian biochemist, had relocated to the USSR in 1933. Before the outbreak of World War II, the family moved to Kyiv and later to Ufa. In 1950, they relocated to Budapest, where Emmerich Sörényi fell severely ill during a scientific conference in Kyiv. The family remained in the USSR until 1953.

Education and the Hungarian Revolution

Ronen obtained his education in Hungary, graduating from Budapest University. In 1956, he participated in the Hungarian Revolution, but its suppression forced him to flee to Israel.

Academic Career in Israel and the United States

In Israel, Ronen earned a bachelor's degree in linguistics and English literature from the Hebrew University. He later pursued a doctorate in Slavic languages and literature at Harvard University. After completing his doctoral studies, Ronen taught at Yale University from 1970 to 1971 before returning to Israel. From 1972 to 1985, he taught at the Hebrew University, combining teaching with publishing activities.

In 1985, Ronen became a professor of Slavic languages and literature at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he remained until his passing. It was in Israel that Imre Sörényi adopted the name "Omri Ronen."

Literary Contributions

Omri Ronen's extensive body of work appeared in various literary publications, including the journals "Zvezda," "Literaturnoye obozreniye," and "Novoye literaturnoye obozreniye." In "Zvezda," he maintained a regular column. Some of his writings were later published in collections, including "Shram," "Poetika Osipa Mandelshtama," and "Serebryany vek kak umyshel i vymyshel."

Personal Life

Omri Ronen was married to Irene Yakovlevna Vaiskopf, a literary scholar and sister of the prominent Israeli philologist Mikhail Yakovlevich Vaiskopf.
