Kurt Hamrin, a Swedish football legend, was born in Hudiksvall, Sweden. He began his football journey with Huvudsta and Rosunga youth teams before joining AIK Solna, a Stockholm-based professional club, in 1952. Hamrin was a multifaceted athlete who excelled in both football and ice hockey, playing for the Swedish national ice hockey team twice.
Club Career
In 1956, Hamrin embarked on his illustrious Italian adventure, joining Serie A giants Juventus. He spent one season in Turin before moving to Padova in 1957, where he again played for a single season. His true brilliance, however, blossomed at Fiorentina, where he spent nine seasons from 1958 to 1967.
Hamrin's time at Fiorentina was marked by exceptional talent and accolades. He scored a remarkable 150 goals in 289 Serie A appearances, setting a club record that stood for three decades until surpassed by Gabriel Batistuta in 2000. His notable achievements included winning the Coppa Italia twice (1961, 1966) and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1961.
International Career
Hamrin's international debut for Sweden came in 1953. He played a crucial role in Sweden's second-place finish at the 1958 FIFA World Cup, where he provoked the expulsion of Erich Juskowiak in the semi-final against West Germany.
Post-Football Life
After retiring in 1972, Hamrin resided in Florence, Italy. He remained closely associated with Fiorentina, attending club events and ceremonies. Kurt Hamrin passed away on February 4, 2024, at the age of 90, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as one of the greatest Scandinavian football players of all time.
