Early Influences and Formation

La Roux is a British electropop duo consisting of singer-keyboardist Elly Jackson and producer-songwriter Ben Langmaid. The name "La Roux" translates to "The Red" or "The Girl with Red Hair" in French. Citing influences from 1980s artists like Heaven 17, Depeche Mode, and The Human League, the duo began their musical journey in 2006 with an acoustic project called "Automan."

Elly Jackson: The Voice of La Roux

Elly Jackson's musical interests initially leaned towards folk artists like Carole King and Nick Drake. However, her musical tastes evolved, and she drew inspiration from David Bowie, Madonna, Annie Lennox, Prince, and actress Molly Ringwald. Jackson is known for her critical stance towards contemporary music, believing that modern culture has lowered the standards for pop performers.

Ben Langmaid: The Production Genius

Ben Langmaid is a seasoned producer and composer from London. He has collaborated with Rollo Armstrong from the electronic music group Faithless, co-writing the 1996 single "Help Me Make It." Langmaid also penned lyrics for Kubb's 2005 debut album "Mother" but declined the offer to join the band permanently.

Touring Members

On tour and during concerts, La Roux is joined by support members Michael Norris, William Bowerman, and Mickey O'Brien. Michael Norris provides additional keyboards and technical assistance, while William Bowerman is the group's drummer. Mickey O'Brien, also known as Ladyburden, serves as a backing vocalist.

Breakthrough and Debut Album

In 2008, La Roux released their debut single "Quicksand" through Kitsuné Music. The track gained traction, leading to a record deal with Polydor Records. Their follow-up single, "In For The Kill," became a massive hit, reaching number two on the UK charts. The third single, "Bulletproof," topped the UK charts and made waves in the US, earning the group a nomination for the Mercury Prize.
