A Malagasy Teacher's Tumour Weighing 5kg
A school teacher in Madagascar, Lalao, endured a massive 5kg tumour on her face for 14 years, preventing her from turning her head. Despite seeking help from local doctors, she was left with no hope for a cure.
Desperation and Hope
In her desperation, Lalao turned to the 'Mercy Ships', a charitable hospital ship offering free surgeries to those without access to healthcare. After an eight-hour wait, she shared her story with a team of experts.
Mercy and Surgery
Lalao was accepted onto the ship in November 2015 and underwent surgery two days later. The successful procedure removed the enormous burden from her face.
Relief and a New Lease on Life
"I woke up in the morning and the growth was gone. I was finally free from that big lump," Lalao exclaimed. While the tumour had been painless, it had restricted her mobility and made sleeping difficult.
Financial Struggles and Obstacles
Lalao's initial attempts to receive treatment at local hospitals proved fruitless. She made payments of $115 but was repeatedly turned away by surgeons.
Determination and Support
Despite her setbacks, Lalao's husband, Alfred, encouraged her to seek help. They learned about a child who had a similar tumour removed on board the 'Mercy Ships'.
Waiting and Perseverance
At the Antananarivo hospital, Lalao faced a crowd of hundreds waiting for surgery. Undeterred, she waited eight hours before sharing her story with the experts. She was subsequently referred to the 'Mercy Ships' for surgery.
Homecoming and Gratitude
Lalao and her family arrived at the 'Mercy Ships' in Toamasina. After surgery, Alfred was overjoyed, stating, "I cried when I saw Lalao coming out of the operating room."
A Brighter Future
Lalao is now healthy and can move her neck freely. She looks forward to teaching again and working on her family's farm.

Lalao and Alfred share their story to spread awareness about the 'Mercy Ships' and the vital assistance they provide to those in need. "If you have a problem like mine, the experts on the ship can help you," Lalao says. "We thank everyone who took care of us."
