Lama Gyourme: A Bhutanese Buddhist Monk and Musician
Born in Bhutan in 1948, Lama Gyourme was entrusted to the Djang Tchub Tcheu Ling monastery at the age of four. Displaying an aptitude for spiritual music, he became a full-time resident at the monastery by the age of nine, immersing himself in Buddhist teachings and traditional art and music.
Spiritual Journey and Ordination
At 20, Gyourme embarked on his first spiritual retreat, lasting 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days, which culminated in his ordination as a lama at the Sarnath monastery in India under the guidance of Kalu Rinpoche. During this retreat, Kalu Rinpoche bestowed upon him the title of Umze, recognizing his mastery of music.
Education and Recognition
After completing his studies at the Rumtek monastery in Sikkim, Gyourme returned to Bhutan and received his Kagyu teacher's diploma from the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje. Gyourme's accomplishments extended beyond the monastery, as he also contributed to the music of the film "Himalaya."
Leadership and Artistic Endeavors
Since 1974, Lama Gyourme has resided in France, where he serves as the director of the Kagyu Dzong center in Paris and the Vajradhara Ling center in Normandy. As a musician, he has collaborated with renowned artists, sharing his spiritual music with the world. Gyourme's impact on Buddhism and music has earned him widespread recognition and respect both within and outside Bhutan.
