Lamar Alexander was born on July 5, 1940, in Maryville, Tennessee, to a kindergarten teacher and an elementary school principal. His ancestors have lived in Tennessee for seven generations. Alexander received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University in 1962 and a Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law in 1965.
