Early Life and Education
Leida Volpert was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russia, on October 17, 1924. She graduated from the philological faculty of Leningrad University in 1949.
Chess Career
Volpert was an accomplished chess player, earning the title of Grandmaster in 1978. She was crowned champion of Leningrad in 1964 and represented the USSR in several international competitions. In the Soviet Championships, she triumphed in 1954, 1958, and 1959. She also had impressive performances in other championships, securing the following placements:
1951: 3rd-4th
1953: 3rd-5th1955: 2nd-4th
1956: 2nd
1960: 3rd
1962: 3rd-4th (21st Championship) and 2nd-3rd (22nd Championship)
1964: 2nd-4th
Volpert participated in the World Championship competitions from 1955 to 1961, including the Candidates Tournaments, where she placed:

Academic Career
In addition to her chess achievements, Volpert was a distinguished scholar. She defended her Ph.D. dissertation in philology in 1955, focusing on the writer Jean-Richard Bloch. From 1962 to 1977, she taught at Pskov Pedagogical Institute. In 1977, she joined the University of Tartu, where she became a professor in 1990 and professor emeritus in 1993. In 1989, she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on the influence of psychological tradition in French literature during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
