Milko Vidmar: Slovenian Polymath
Academic CareerBorn into a modest family, Milko Vidmar displayed exceptional academic brilliance from a young age. He graduated from the Vienna University of Technology and later became a professor at the University of Ljubljana. Vidmar played a pivotal role in establishing the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and served as the university's rector from 1928 to 1929. In 1948, he founded the Electrotechnical Institute in Ljubljana, which now bears his name.
Renowned Chess Master
Vidmar's exceptional intellect extended beyond the realm of academia. He was one of the most acclaimed chess masters of the early 20th century, often besting professional players despite his amateur status. Over his illustrious career, he participated in approximately 40 tournaments, consistently achieving high rankings. His most notable triumphs include second and third place at the San Sebastián tournament (1911), sharing first and second place at the Hastings tournament (1925/26), and joint victory at the Sliac tournament (1932). Vidmar also led the Yugoslavian team at two Chess Olympiads (1931 and 1935).
Chess Writer and Judge
Beyond his prowess on the board, Vidmar left an enduring legacy in chess literature. He authored several books, including "Half a Century on the Chessboard" and "Chess Chats with a Beginner." Additionally, he served as a chess judge and notably officiated as the chief arbiter at the 1948 World Championship Tournament.
Son's Chess Legacy
Vidmar's son, Milan Vidmar Jr., inherited his father's chess talent. He achieved international master status and played a crucial role in Yugoslavia's victory at the 9th Chess Olympiad (1950). Vidmar's contributions to science, philosophy, and chess continue to inspire generations of Slovenians and chess enthusiasts worldwide.
