Biography of Lars Jaeger
Lars Jaeger is a Swiss-German entrepreneur, financial theorist, alternative investment manager, and author. He is known for his works on hedge funds, quantitative investing, and risk management. With his books on private investment funds, Jaeger has become a prominent figure in the hedge fund industry, contributing to greater transparency, liquidity, and economic efficiency. He is the founder and CEO of 'Alternative Beta Partners', a firm that explores alternative beta spaces as an economically efficient way to access high risk premiums.
Early Life and Education
Lars Jaeger studied physics and philosophy at the University of Bonn in Germany and the École Polytechnique in Paris. He obtained his doctoral degree in theoretical physics from the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden, where he continued his research after defending his dissertation.
Career
Jaeger's financial career began in 1997 at Olsen & Associates, a Zurich-based company specializing in quantitative research. Before founding 'Alternative Beta Partners' in early 2010, he spent eight years as a partner at 'Partners Group', where he was responsible for hedge funds, alternative beta investment strategies, risk management, and account management. Jaeger was also one of the founders of 'saisGroup', an asset management company for hedge funds, which merged with 'Partners Group' in 2001.
Contributions
In 2003, drawing on his investment experience and scientific research on absolute return-focused hedge funds, Jaeger, together with Bill Fung and David Hsieh, coined the term 'alternative beta strategies'. His research sparked a new wave of interest in profitable hedge fund strategies, and by 2007, there were already around 1100-1200 new hedge funds. Jaeger frequently provides commentary in print and television media on financial matters, hedge fund topics, the resurgence of their popularity, and risk management for alternative investment strategies. He was one of the early advocates for independent risk management and transparency in hedge funds. Jaeger is also the author of several scientific articles published in leading journals and received the 'Martello award' for the 'Best Paper of the Year' from the 'Journal of Alternative Investment' in 2005.
