Biography of Laura Branigan

Laura Branigan was an American singer, known for her hit song "Self Control." She was born on July 3, 1957, in New York. Her dance hits dominated the airwaves in Germany and other countries in continental Europe throughout the 1980s.

Early Career

Laura Branigan started her career performing in musicals. In the 1970s, she worked as a backing vocalist for Leonard Cohen. Despite facing legal troubles at the beginning of her solo career, by 1982, Branigan had released her debut album of dance music. The song "Gloria" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Grammy. In Germany, it became the biggest hit of the year, marking the start of the Eurodisco era.

Success in Europe

While Branigan's popularity in the United States was short-lived, she managed to establish herself as one of the most successful female artists of the decade in the European market. Her signature song became the disco hit "Self Control" from her 1984 album of the same name. Branigan's music and stage presence served as an inspiration for many European projects of that time, including the Soviet ensemble "Mirage."

Later Career

In the 1990s, Branigan's new recordings were irregularly released, such as her collaboration with David Hasselhoff on the theme song for the TV series "Baywatch" in 1994. As the years went on, she focused less on singing and more on acting in television series. She received favorable reviews for her portrayal of Janis Joplin in the Broadway musical "Love, Janis."
