Biography of Laura Codruța Kövesi

Laura Codruța Kövesi, the first female General Prosecutor of Romania, began her professional career in 1995 at the Prosecutor's Office in Sibiu after completing her law degree at the University of Cluj. Born in 1973, she has dedicated herself to the field of law and criminal justice for over two decades.

Professional Career

From 2000 to 2004, Kövesi served as the Chief Prosecutor in Sibiu, focusing on combating organized crime. In January 2006, she took on the role of leading the Bureau for Combating Organized Crime and Terrorism in the Sibiu County. She holds a Doctor of Law degree from the University of Timișoara, with her dissertation focusing on the fight against organized crime through criminal law.

Appointment as General Prosecutor

In a historic move, President Traian Băsescu appointed Laura Codruța Kövesi as the General Prosecutor of Romania. Her appointment marked the first time a woman had held this position in the country. Her tenure began after the resignation of Ilie Botoș, the former General Prosecutor, and the heads of the country's security services, including the intelligence agency and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, following the disappearance of Syrian-born entrepreneur Omar Hayssam. Hayssam was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping of a group of Romanian journalists in Iraq for ransom.

Interests outside of Law

In addition to her legal career, Laura Codruța Kövesi has a passion for basketball. She represented the Romanian National Youth Women's Team and achieved the title of Vice-Champion of Europe in 1989 at a tournament held in Timișoara.
