Laura Marling, born as Laura Beatrice Marling, is an English musician, folk singer, guitarist, and songwriter. She was born in 1990 in Hampshire, England, as the youngest of three daughters of a music teacher. From an early age, Laura began learning to play the guitar, influenced by her father's love for folk music.
Early Life and Education
Laura Marling attended Leighton Park School, a private Quaker school in Reading, Berkshire. It was during her time in school that she developed her musical skills and interests. She showed great talent and passion for folk music, which would later become the defining style of her music career.
Musical Career
At the age of 16, Laura Marling moved to London, where she soon became a member of the British indie-folk band 'Noah and the Whale'. It was during this period that she also began a romantic relationship with the band's lead vocalist and guitarist, Charlie Fink. However, her time with the band was short-lived, and after the release of their first album, 'Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down', she left the group and ended her relationship with Fink in 2008.
Despite not launching her own solo project at that time, Laura Marling was already well-known in the British music scene and was actively sought after for collaborations. She worked with artists such as Jamie T and Adam Green from 'The Moldy Peaches', further solidifying her reputation as a talented musician.
In February 2008, Marling released her debut album, 'Alas, I Cannot Swim', which received critical acclaim and was nominated for the British music award, the 'Mercury Prize'. Her second album, 'I Speak Because I Can', was released in 2010 and also received positive reviews. It charted in the UK and earned her another nomination for the 'Mercury Music Prize'.
Rise to Prominence
Laura Marling's popularity continued to grow, and she began making appearances on television shows such as 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson' and 'Later With Jools Holland'.
