Laura Poretsky - A Rising American Designer
Laura Poretsky is an American designer who is considered one of the most promising designers of her generation. Her collections are sold in renowned stores such as 'Neiman Marcus', 'Bergdorf Goodman', 'Cusp', 'Saks Fifth Avenue', 'Intermix', and 'Henri Bendel'.
A Citizen of the World
Laura Poretsky can truly call herself a citizen of the world. She was born in France, with a Russian father and a mother of Danish and Brazilian descent. Growing up between Paris, Rio de Janeiro, and New York, her cosmopolitan upbringing became a strong asset when she decided to become a designer.
A Journey in Design
From a young age, Laura had a strong interest in art. Eventually, she enrolled in the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, initially studying photography. However, she switched her focus to fashion design when she realized she spent more time with fabrics she photographed than with her camera. After graduating, Laura landed a coveted position at Ralph Lauren, where she honed her sense of style.
James - A Swimwear Sensation
Having spent a significant part of her life on the beaches of Brazil, Laura eventually left Ralph Lauren and founded her own swimwear line, aptly named 'James'. Within a few months, this line gained wide recognition, and Laura Poretsky's designs appeared not only in the pages of respected fashion magazines but also on celebrities and fashionistas across America, from Hollywood to the Hamptons.
Expanding the Horizon
Encouraged by the success of her venture, Laura expanded her range in 2004 by developing a full ready-to-wear clothing line that truly embodies her unique spirit. It combines French femininity, Brazilian sensuality, and American simplicity with a focus on comfort. Various sources inspired her, including the Romanov period in Russian history, the Brazilian film 'Black Orpheus', 60s fashion, and even light installations by Dan Flavin.
Abaeté and Partnerships
The first 'Abaeté' resortwear collection was inspired by Japanese themes and immediately appeared in stores like 'Kirna Zabete' and 'Linda Dresner'. Laura showcased several 'Abaeté' collections at New York Fashion Week, collaborated on various accessory lines, and became the first designer to develop a collection for the renowned footwear brand 'Payless' through 'Payless ShoeSource'. The 'Abaeté' collection for 'Payless', which debuted at Laura Poretsky's fall show in 2006, was incredibly successful both in press reviews and sales.
Active in New York's Social Scene
Laura Poretsky has become increasingly involved in the New York social scene and has established herself as a young but influential patron of the arts.
