Birth and Baptism
Blessed Laura Vicuña was born on April 5, 1891, in Santiago, Chile. She was baptized on April 24, 1891. Her father, Jose Domingo Vicuña, was an army officer stationed in Temuco on the Argentine border. After her father's death, Laura's mother entered into a common-law relationship with Manuel Mora, a wealthy farmer.
Education and Vocation
In 1901, Laura enrolled in a boarding school in Junin de los Andes, Argentina, run by the Salesian Sisters. On December 8, 1901, she joined the Daughters of Mary Sodality. After her confirmation in 1902, Laura asked the sisters to accept her into their religious congregation. However, they declined due to her young age and her mother's irregular living situation. Despite this, Laura made private vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. She remained at the boarding school, living out her monastic vows as fully as possible.
Conflict at Home
When Laura returned home during school breaks, she pleaded with her mother's partner, Manuel Mora, to marry her mother. This request was met with a brutal beating. The severe abuse prompted Laura to return to the boarding school, where she became ill due to her injuries.
Acceptance of Pain and Forgiveness
In the hours before her death, Laura forgave her stepfather and shared with her mother the monastic vows she had made. She died on January 22, 1904, with her epitaph reading: "Her life was a poem of purity, love, and sacrifice for her mother."
Beatification and Legacy
Laura Vicuña was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3, 1988. She is the patron saint of broken families and is remembered for her unwavering faith, love, and forgiveness in the face of adversity. Her feast day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on January 22.
