Early Life and EducationLauren Underwood was born in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 2008.
Political Beginnings
In the lead-up to the 2018 House primaries, Underwood emerged as a formidable candidate in Illinois's 14th Congressional District. She prevailed in the crowded Democratic primary, capturing 57.3% of the vote, and subsequently ousted incumbent Republican Representative Randy Hultgren in the general election.
Historic Election Victory
Underwood's election marked several historic milestones. She became the first woman and first person of color to represent the 14th District. At the age of 32 upon taking office on January 3, 2019, she also became the youngest African American woman elected to Congress.
