Laurence Rossignol

Early Life and Education

Rossignol's political activism began at the age of 16 when she protested against the mandatory military service law. In 1976, she joined the Revolutionary Communist League (LCR) while pursuing her education at the universities of Dijon and Sorbonne, where she earned a Master's degree in Law.

Political Career

Early Political Engagements

Rossignol became active in trade union movements and joined the Socialist Party in 1981, aligning herself with its left wing. She worked in the administration of Laurent Fabius, then President of the National Assembly.

Local and Regional Politics

From 1997 onwards, Rossignol was deeply involved in the politics of the Oise department, which traditionally supported the right. She unsuccessfully ran for the National Assembly three times (1997, 2002, 2007) and contested the mayoralty of Compiègne twice (2001, 2008).

In 1998, she joined the Socialist Party's list for the Picardy Regional Council and became its Vice-President for Youth and Social Economy after the left's victory in 2004.

Senate and Ministerial Career

In 2011, Rossignol was elected to the French Senate and subsequently left the Compiègne city council. In 2016, she became Minister for Families, Children, and Women's Rights under Prime Minister Valls and later retained the position under Prime Minister Cazeneuve.

Government Service under Macron

In 2017, under Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, Rossignol was appointed Secretary of State for Equality between Women and Men. She also led the Socialist Party's list in the 2017 Senate elections for the Oise department, which gained her a Senate seat.

Feminism and Activism

Throughout her career, Rossignol has been a vocal feminist and has organized numerous campaigns in support of women's rights. She was also a prominent figure in the "No to Racism" movement in the 1980s.
