Mark Foley: A Political Biography
Early Life and EducationMark Foley was born on September 8, 1954, in Newton, Massachusetts. His family relocated to Florida during his college years, where he attended Palm Beach State College. Foley is a devout Roman Catholic.
Political Career
Foley began his political journey by winning the 1994 election to the United States House of Representatives, representing Florida's 16th Congressional District as a Republican. He consistently won re-election with significant majorities throughout his career. As a member of the House Budget Committee, Foley played a role in the Florida vote recount during the 2000 presidential campaign. In 2006, he rose to the position of Deputy Republican Whip.
Legislative Initiatives
Foley advocated for various causes, including combating child pornography, protecting the Everglades, and supporting Holocaust survivors. He also worked on legislation to expedite the deportation of certain nonviolent foreign offenders.
Departure from Congress
In September 2006, Foley resigned from Congress after allegations surfaced that he had sent sexually explicit electronic messages to underage congressional pages. Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement did not lead to any criminal charges.
Post-Political Life
After leaving Congress, Foley worked in real estate in Palm Beach, Florida. He publicly came out as gay in 2007 and was in a relationship with Layne Nisenbaum, a Palm Beach dermatologist. In 2009, Foley launched his own political talk show, "Foley on Politics."

Foley's legacy is marred by the sexual misconduct allegations that led to his resignation.
