Biography of Laurence Stephen Lowry

Early Life

Laurence Stephen Lowry was born in 1887 in Stretford, Lancashire, England. His birth was difficult for his mother, Elizabeth, and she did not even want to look at her son after his birth. Lowry's father, Robert, worked as a clerk and was a very reserved man. Lowry described his childhood as unhappy, growing up in a repressive family atmosphere.

Education and Early Artistic Development

Lowry showed talent in school and had a few friends. He had a passion for drawing from a young age and began taking private art lessons after leaving school. In 1905, he started studying at the Manchester Municipal College of Art under the French artist Pierre Adolphe Valette, who recognized Lowry's talent. In 1915, Lowry enrolled at the Salford Royal Technical College, now known as the University of Salford, where he developed an interest in creating industrial landscapes and began forming his unique artistic style.

Personal Life and Career

After his father's death in 1932, Lowry took on the responsibility of caring for his mother, who suffered from constant nervousness and depression. Working as a clerk during the day and caring for his mother in the evenings, Lowry found time for his paintings at night when his mother was asleep. Despite working in isolation, Lowry developed his own unique style, unaffected by contemporary artistic trends.

Recognition and Later Life

Lowry's first exhibition took place when he was 52 years old and was a tremendous success. Despite being described as a reserved person, Lowry was known to enjoy telling jokes and amusing stories. His paintings depicted industrial landscapes of the northern England, often featuring "matchstick men" going about their daily lives. Some of his most famous works include "The Return from the Mill," "Cricket Match," and "Oldfield Road Dwellings, Salford." Today, many of his paintings can be seen in the Salford Museum. Lowry passed away in 1976 at the age of 88, leaving a legacy as one of Britain's most renowned artists.
