Early Life and Education
Laurent Cantet was born on 15 June 1961, in Melle, France, to parents who were schoolteachers. He graduated from the prestigious French film school IDHEC (Institut des hautes études cinématographiques) in 1986.
Short Film Career
During his time at IDHEC, Cantet began making short films as a director and cinematographer. In 1991, he won the Jean Vigo Award for his short film "Tous à la manif."
Feature Film Debut
Cantet's feature film debut, "Human Resources" (1999), was a critical and commercial success. The film won the César Award for Best Debut Film and prizes at several international film festivals.
International Acclaim
Cantet's international breakthrough came with the film "The Class" (2008), based on the novel by François Bégaudeau. The film won the Palme d'Or, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Critical Reception
Cantet's film "Time Out" (2001) was ranked among the best films of the 2000s by several publications, including Slant Magazine (99th), The Guardian (9th), and The A.V. Club (11th).
Later Career
