Dutch and Swiss Footballer
Adam was a Dutch and Swiss footballer who played for the national teams of both countries. He began his career at the Dutch club HVV in The Hague. At the age of 19, he moved to Zurich to study and joined Grasshopper Club Zurich.
International Debut
In 1929, Adam made his debut for the Swiss national team in a match against Austria. A year later, when the Dutch national team visited Switzerland, Adam was called up to play for his native country. The match ended in a 6-3 victory for Switzerland.
Career for the Netherlands
Adam went on to play 11 matches for the Netherlands, scoring 6 goals. In 1932, he scored both goals in the team's 2-0 victory over Germany in Dusseldorf. He returned to HVV in the spring of 1933, but heart problems forced him to retire from playing a few months later at the age of 24.
Tragic End
Adam passed away on May 15, 1941, at the age of 32, during a friendly match between the Thor and Anasher teams in Surabaya, Dutch East Indies. Adam scored two goals and assisted on three others in the match before leaving the field in the eighth minute of the second half, clutching his heart. The referee of the match, Lambeek, wrote about Adam's death in the magazine De Scheidsrechter. When Adam left the field, the referee asked him about his condition, and Adam replied, "My heart is acting up again, but the boys have a good lead, and I can rest."
