Early Life and EducationLaza Lazarević was born into a merchant family in Serbia in 1844. He completed elementary and lower secondary education before pursuing higher studies. In 1865, he graduated with a bachelor's degree. Subsequently, he studied law in Belgrade and medicine in Berlin.
Medical Career and Military Service
Upon graduating from medical school, Lazarević served as a physician in a state hospital in Belgrade. His extensive medical career included roles as a military doctor in the wars against Turkey (1876-1878) and in the Serbian-Bulgarian War (1885). He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and published 22 medical articles in both Serbian and international journals.
Literary Debut and Acclaim
In 1886, Lazarević published his first collection of short stories, "Six Tales of Laza Lazarević." These stories garnered widespread attention for their fresh themes, gentle humor, and exquisite prose. Lazarević was hailed as "the Serbian Turgenev," establishing him as Serbia's most gifted writer at the time. Several of his stories, including "At the Well" and "My Father," were translated into Russian.
Major Works and Recognition
Lazarević's most notable work, the novella "He Knew Everything," earned him the prestigious award from the Serbian Royal Academy. Published towards the end of his life, this novella showcased Lazarević's profound exploration of human nature and the depths of human desire.
