Biography of György Lázár

György Lázár is a Hungarian politician and statesman who served as the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Hungarian People's Republic from May 15, 1975, to June 25, 1987. He was born into a working-class family and received a technical education. In 1945, he joined the Hungarian Communist Party and went on to work in the State Planning Committee of the Hungarian People's Republic. In 1970, he was admitted into the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party.

From 1970 to 1973, Lázár served as the Minister of Labour, and from 1973 to 1975, he held the positions of Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Chairman of the State Planning Committee, and representative of the country at the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. At the XI Congress of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party in March 1975, he became a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee. Shortly after, from May 15, 1975, to June 25, 1987, he occupied the position of Chairman of the Council of Ministers. From 1987 to 1988, he served as the Deputy General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party. Since 1988, he has been retired.
