Early Life and Career

Lea Michele Sarfati was born in the Bronx, New York, on August 29, 1986. Her mother is Italian-American Catholic, while her father is a Spanish-Sephardic Jew. Michele grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, where she attended school. She was accepted to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts but chose to pursue a career on stage instead.

Broadway Beginnings

Michele's acting career began at the age of eight when she accompanied a friend to an open casting call for a musical. She decided to try out for a role and ended up winning it. In 1995, she made her Broadway debut as a replacement for the young Cosette in the original New York production of "Les Misérables." She went on to appear in "Ragtime" and, in 2004, played Chava and Tevye's youngest daughter in the Broadway revival of "Fiddler on the Roof."

The Glee Phenomenon

In 2009, Michele landed the role of ambitious singer Rachel Berry in the Fox television series "Glee." The show became a massive hit, and Michele's performance earned her a Screen Actors Guild Award and nominations for a Teen Choice Award, Golden Globe, and Emmy. In addition, she won a Satellite Award in 2009, beating out more experienced actresses such as Edie Falco, Toni Collette, and Tina Fey.

Beyond Glee

Michele has also pursued a musical career outside of "Glee." Her cover of "Gives You Hell" by The All-American Rejects topped the Irish singles chart and reached the top forty of the Billboard 200. She was also named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World" in 2010, and FHM magazine ranked her seventh on its list of "Sexiest Women" that year.

Personal Life

Michele has nine tattoos on her body. She is an advocate for LGBT rights and actively supports animal welfare charities. She follows a vegan diet and owns two cats named Claude and Sheila, after characters in the psychedelic musical "Hair." She is currently dating Broadway star Theo Stockman.
