Early Life and Education
Born with a passion for theatre, Lee Breuer graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles. He honed his skills at the San Francisco Actor's Studio and embarked on an educational journey in Europe in 1965. His studies took him to Berliner Ensemble and the renowned Polish theatre director Jerzy Grotowski.
Mabou Mines Theatre Company
In 1970, Breuer co-founded the experimental Mabou Mines theatre company in New York City. Mabou Mines, still active today, became renowned for its innovative productions.
Acclaimed Productions
Breuer's most celebrated work is "The Gospel at Colonus" (1985), starring Morgan Freeman. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, Obie Awards, and Emmy Awards, it toured worldwide, including Moscow.
Teaching Career
Breuer shared his knowledge as a professor at prestigious universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Stanford.
Recognition and Awards
Breuer received numerous Obie Awards, notably for his productions of Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" (2004) and plays by Samuel Beckett.
Russian Debut
In 2010, Breuer directed Sam Shepard's "Curse of the Starving Class" at the Saratov Youth Theatre in Russia, marking his first production in the country.
