Childhood and FamilyLee Brackett was born into a literary family. Her father, William Franklin Brackett, was an aspiring writer and accountant. Her mother, Margaret Durlas Brackett, was a homemaker. Tragedy struck in 1918 when Brackett's father succumbed to the "Spanish flu." Following this loss, Brackett and her mother relocated to Santa Monica to live with her maternal grandparents.
Literary Debut
Brackett's writing career began in 1940 with the publication of her short story "Martian Gladiator" in Astounding Science Fictionmagazine. This marked her debut as a professional writer.

In 1945, Brackett created one of her most notable characters: Erik John Stark. A spaceman known for his courage and tenacity, Stark featured prominently in Brackett's science fiction novels and short stories.
