Born in Osaka, Japan, Leiko Ikemura embarked on her artistic journey with a degree in Spanish literature from Osaka University. Fueled by an unyielding passion for the arts, she ventured to Spain in 1972 to delve into the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Salamanca and Granada. Concurrently, she honed her skills in sculpture at a local art studio.

From Seville to Switzerland

In 1973, Ikemura expanded her artistic horizons by enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville, where she immersed herself in the intricacies of painting. Her stay in Switzerland in the early 1980s proved to be a career-defining moment. In Zurich, she gained the attention of discerning art critics and had her first exhibition in Germany, organized by the Bonn Artists Association.

Artistic Renaissance in Germany

In 1983, at the invitation of the city authorities of Nuremberg, Ikemura spent nine months as the city's artist-in-residence. This prestigious appointment culminated in a solo exhibition at the Nuremberg Art Museum, showcasing her exceptional talent to local audiences.
