Biography of Lel Kuzmenkov
Lel Kuzmenkov was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist, monumental artist, and sculptor. He was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Born in 1925 in Mariupol, he became an honorary citizen of the city.
Education and Early Career
In 1947, Kuzmenkov enrolled at the Kharkiv Art School, where he studied under N. S. Slipchenko and L. Fitilev. He completed his studies in 1951, with his diploma work titled "Stalin Speaks in the Underground."
Monumental Artworks
Kuzmenkov's monumental mosaics and murals, covering a total area of 2000 square meters, can be seen on buildings in Mariupol, Slavyansk, Artemovsk, Berdiansk, and Urzuf. In collaboration with V. K. Konstantinov, he created monuments to poet Georgiy Kostoprav (1992, Mayanisol), Metropolitan Ignatius (1998, Mariupol), and the "Liberator Warrior" (Mariupol).
Contribution to Literature and Art
Kuzmenkov was also known for his linocuts accompanying handwritten copies of "Kobzar" by Taras Shevchenko in Greek translations. He participated in republican, all-union, and international exhibitions, including one in Paris in 1992. In 1959, he had a joint exhibition with L. N. Gadi in Mariupol.
He authored the book "The Resettlement of Crimean Greeks to the Northern Azov Region in 1778-80 (Causes and Consequences)" in 1997, as well as several local history essays and articles on art. He was one of the initiators and later a member of the council of the Mariupol Greek Society.
Legacy
Kuzmenkov's works can be found in the permanent exhibitions of the Taras Shevchenko Museum in Kyiv, the Russian National Library in Moscow, and the Mariupol Local Lore Museum.
