Leo Campion: An Anarchist, Actor, and Artist
Early Life and Masonic InitiationBorn on March 24, 1905, in Paris, Léon Louis Octave Campion was a multifaceted artist who embraced various roles throughout his life. In 1923, he relocated to Brussels, where he encountered the anarchist and Freemason Marcel Dieu, known as Hem Day. Under Day's guidance, Campion was initiated into Freemasonry in the 'Les Amis philanthropes' lodge on April 7, 1930, a path he never pursued further.
Brussels Activism and Political Imprisonment
While in Brussels, Campion served as secretary of a group of freethinkers. After an attempt to return to his homeland was thwarted by the monarchist organization Action française, he faced arrest and deportation. In 1933, he was imprisoned for 18 months together with Marcel Dieu for returning his military notice as a protest against anti-pacifist legislation. During his trial, Campion's mockery of authorities landed him a prison sentence.
Friendship and Tragedy with Spanish Anarchists
Campion and Dieu became close friends with Spanish anarchists Buenaventura Durruti and Francisco Ascaso, providing them with shelter. Tragically, both Durruti and Ascaso lost their lives in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War.
Artistic Career and World War II
From 1930 to 1936, Campion showcased his artistic talents as a caricaturist for the Brussels newspaper 'Le Rouge et le Noir.' He pursued a singing career upon returning to Paris, recognizing the limitations of Brussels for such endeavors. During World War II, Campion was detained at the Argeles-sur-Mer concentration camp for his anti-fascist stance. However, his frequent travels between Paris and Brussels made him an ideal messenger for the French Resistance.
Post-War Years and Legacy
After the war, Campion continued to exhibit his artistic versatility, becoming an actor, cabaret director, and producer. He remained an active supporter of the Anarchist Federation until his death on March 6, 1992, in Paris. As a remarkable artist, activist, and thinker, Leo Campion left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire and provoke.
