Robert Sterling was born in 1917 in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and worked as a clothing salesman before pursuing an acting career. In 1939, he signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and changed his name.

Shifting to MGM and Marriage

In 1941, Sterling moved to MGM, where his work gained some recognition but remained largely unremarkable. He married actress Ann Sothern in 1943, and they had a daughter, Patricia, who also became an actress.
