Haakon Stotijn was a renowned Dutch oboist and conductor. His musical journey began at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he excelled as an oboist.
Early Career
After graduating, Stotijn became the principal oboist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra for a year. He then spent nine years as the principal oboist of the Netherlands Opera Orchestra. Concurrently, he embarked on a conducting career, studying in Amsterdam from 1957 to 1962.
Debut and Orchestral Positions
Stotijn made his conducting debut in 1960 while continuing his oboe performance. Throughout his career, he collaborated with various Dutch orchestras, including the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra, which he led from 1971 to 1974.
American Success
In 1977, Stotijn accepted the position of Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra in the United States. He held this prestigious role for 16 years, from 1977 to 1993.
