Venezuelan boxing icon Ricardo Torres, born on January 8, 1968, blazed a trail in the annals of boxing history, becoming the first and only Venezuelan to win world titles in four weight divisions.
Professional Debut and Early Success
On February 14, 1985, Torres made his professional debut, securing a victory on points. His remarkable journey began on January 10, 1988, when he faced South Korean Kim Bon Jun for the vacant WBA minimumweight title. Triumphing via unanimous decision, Torres emerged as the new champion.
Conquering New Heights
In 1993, Torres ascended to the WBA light flyweight belt by knocking out Japan's Shiro Yahiro in the ninth round. Subsequent title defenses against Juan Antonio Torres, Kaen Chor Bandit, and Pichai Chor Siriwat further cemented his dominance in the division.
Pushing the Boundaries
Torres's quest for greatness continued in 1999 when he defeated Argentinean Hugo Rafael Soto for the WBA flyweight title. Shortly after, he added the WBA interim super flyweight belt to his collection by knocking out boxing legend Jose Luis Camacho.
Weight Division Dominance
In 2000, Torres captured the WBA super flyweight title by defeating Japanese champion Hideki Todaka. He successfully defended his crown for a year before losing to Seules Kobayashi in 2001.
Later Career and Retirement
Despite setbacks, Torres remained competitive, challenging for world titles in different weight classes throughout the 2000s. However, after a defeat to Ukrainian Volodymyr Sydorenko in 2004, he decided to call it a day, retiring from the ring on December 22, 2005, after a fight against Punsawat Kraitingdaenggym.
