Biography of Leon Black
Leon Black is an American billionaire and businessman. He founded the companies Apollo Advisors, L.P. and Lion Advisors, L.P. in 1990 to manage investment capital, focusing on corporate restructuring and leveraged buyouts. Since then, Apollo and its subsidiaries have managed approximately $15 billion in similar actions. His estimated net worth is around $4 billion (according to Forbes magazine in 2007).
Education and Early Career
Leon Black attended Dartmouth College, where he studied philosophy and history and graduated in 1973 with a bachelor's degree and honors. He then continued his education at Harvard University, earning an MBA with honors in 1975. Currently, Leon is married and has four children.
His career began in 1977 when he joined the renowned bank Drexel Burnham Lambert. He worked at the organization until 1990, rising to the positions of Chief Executive Officer and head of the Mergers & Acquisitions Group, as well as Assistant to the Chairman of the Corporate Finance. For example, he serves as a director of United Rentals, Inc., Allied Waste Industries, Inc., and Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.
In addition, Leon is a trustee and patron of Dartmouth College, the Museum of Modern Art, Sinai Hospital, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Asia Society.
