Biography of Maurice Steger
Maurice Steger is a Swiss musician and conductor, known for his virtuosity on the recorder. He is a brilliant recorder virtuoso with exceptional technique, instantly captivating his audience and singlehandedly reviving interest in the recorder as an instrument. Since being awarded the title of "the world's most virtuosic recorder player" by the British newspaper 'The Independent', Steger has become a leading interpreter of baroque music, performing concerts worldwide both as a soloist and conductor. Numerous awards and thematic musical projects, released on CDs such as 'Venezia 1625', 'Mr Corelli in London', and 'Una follia di Napoli', serve as further confirmation of his unique position in the world of baroque music.
A Versatile Musician and Conductor
On the one hand, Steger is a brilliant recorder virtuoso with exceptional technique, instantly captivating his audience and singlehandedly reviving interest in the recorder as an instrument. On the other hand, he is also known as an experienced musical leader and conductor, working with the most renowned ensembles globally in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa since 2012. Steger has toured with the Quebec ensemble 'Les Violons Du Roy' in the United States and Canada, maintaining long and warm partnerships with the London-based baroque orchestra 'The English Concert', as well as regularly performing with the Italian 'Barocchisti', the German chamber ensemble 'Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin', 'Europa Galante', an ensemble specializing in authentic baroque music performance, and the 'Venice Baroque Orchestra'.
In addition, Steger has performed as a conductor and soloist with modern orchestras, including the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Frankfurt Brandenburg State Orchestra, Staatsorchester Braunschweig, 'Berlin Barock Solisten', the Hanover-based 'NDR Radio Philharmonie', Taipei Symphony Orchestra, and the Malaysia Symphony Orchestra.
