Early Life and Education

Leonid Maksimovich Brekhovskikh was born on May 6, 1917, in the village of Strunkino, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. He was the eleventh of twelve children born to poor peasant parents. Despite their poverty, Brekhovskikh's mother recognized the importance of education and insisted that her children attend school.

Scientific Career

After graduating from high school in 1929, Brekhovskikh faced obstacles in pursuing higher education due to his family's lack of support for collectivization. In 1930, he moved to Krasnouralsk and continued his education, eventually enrolling in the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Perm State University. He graduated with honors in 1939 and was accepted into the postgraduate program at the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

World War II and Acoustic Mine Defense

With the outbreak of World War II, Brekhovskikh's research interests shifted to the development of methods to protect ships from German acoustic mines. He collaborated with Academician N.N. Andreev in this endeavor.

Post-War Achievements

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Brekhovskikh made significant contributions to the field of acoustics. He proposed the "tangent plane approximation" for wave scattering from rough surfaces and discovered the underwater sound channel, which laid the foundation for the field of underwater acoustics. In 1947, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the theory of wave propagation in layered media and received the N.D. Papaleksi Prize for his groundbreaking research.

Academia and Science Administration

In 1953, Brekhovskikh was appointed professor and elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Institute of Acoustics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, serving as its first director from 1954 to 1962.

He became an active leader in science, mentoring young scientists, establishing scientific collaborations with international scholars, and overseeing the construction of research vessels specifically equipped for oceanographic work. In 1968, he was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Oceanographic Expeditions and Discoveries

Led by Brekhovskikh, the "Polygon-70" hydrophysical experiment aboard the research vessel "Akademik Kurchatov" in 1970 resulted in the groundbreaking discovery of "synoptic eddies" in the ocean. This discovery revolutionized the understanding of ocean dynamics. The Soviet-American POLYMODE experiment (1977-1979) further expanded research on this topic.

International Recognition and Honors

Brekhovskikh's scientific contributions earned him international recognition. He was elected a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, received the Rayleigh Medal from the Institute of Acoustics in the UK, and became a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States.

Later Career and Legacy

From 1980 to 1992, Brekhovskikh headed the Department of Ocean Acoustics at the Institute of Oceanology. He remained an active scientist, publishing over 200 papers and several influential books, including "Waves in Layered Media" and "Acoustics of the Ocean."

He continued to inspire and mentor the next generation of scientists, holding lectures and leading seminars. His exceptional contributions to acoustics and oceanography have left an enduring legacy in the scientific community.

Personal Life

Brekhovskikh maintained a healthy and active lifestyle, practicing yoga and enjoying classical music. He lived and worked in Moscow until his passing. He was survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
