Velyevskyi's foray into the world of film began in the late 1950s at the Odessa TV Center, where he initially served as a lighting technician before progressing to cameraman. He further honed his craft by completing his education at the prestigious VGIK under renowned cinematographer A. Galperin in 1964. His graduation film, "Molodyozhon" (1963), was co-directed with Vadim Avloshenko.
