Early Life and Education
Leonid Vladimirovich Drachevsky was born on April 5, 1942, in Alma-Ata. He graduated from the Mendeleyev Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology in 1966. Drachevsky pursued further education at the State Central Institute of Physical Culture (1982), the Higher Party School (1986), and the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry (1993).
Diplomatic Career
Drachevsky entered the Russian Foreign Ministry in 1992. He served in the Russian Consulate General in Barcelona, Spain. From 1993 to 1996, he held various positions in the Foreign Ministry, including Head of Department and Director of a Department.
In 1996, Drachevsky was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Poland. He served in this capacity until 1998, when he became Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation.
Political Appointments
From 1999 to 2000, Drachevsky served as Minister for CIS Affairs. In May 2000, he was appointed Plenipotentiary Representative of the Russian President to the Siberian Federal District.
Other Positions
Prior to his diplomatic career, Drachevsky served as Deputy Chairman of the State Committee of the Russian SFSR for Physical Culture and Sports (1986-1990), and First Deputy Chairman of the State Committee of the USSR for Physical Culture and Sports (1990-1991).
