Childhood and Education
Leonid Cornanu was born in the village of Cosnita, now in Moldova, in 1909. He graduated from the pedagogical institute in Tiraspol, the literary institute in Kharkiv (1932), and the postgraduate course at the Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History (candidate of philosophical sciences).
Literary Career
Early WorksCornanu's first poems were published in the magazine "Moldova Literare" in 1929. His first poetry collection, "Versuri Felurite" (Various Poems), appeared in 1930.
Moldavian Folklore
Cornanu was a pioneer of children's literature in Moldova. He also collected Moldavian folk songs, proverbs, and sayings. In 1939, he co-published "Cântece Norodnice Moldovenești" (Moldavian Folk Songs) with David Gerschfeld.
World War II and Post-War Plays
During the Great Patriotic War, Cornanu served in the army. After demobilization, he settled in Chisinau. In the post-war years, he wrote several plays, including "In Văile Moldovei" (In the Valleys of Moldova), "Fericirea Marioarei" (Marioara's Happiness), and "Carpeta Ilenei" (Ileana's Carpet).
Film and Translations
In 1955, Cornanu's screenplay "Liana" was adapted into the first feature film by the "Moldova-Film" studio. He also translated works by Taras Shevchenko, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and other poets, as well as the Statute of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Posthumous Recognition
After Cornanu's death, several collections of his works were published, including "Versuri" (Poems) and "Poezii" (Poetry). His plays continued to be performed by theaters throughout the country.
