Leonid Arkadyevich Kostandov: Soviet Statesman and Industrialist
Early Life and CareerLeonid Arkadyevich Kostandov was born on November 27, 1915, in Kerki, Turkmenistan. As an Armenian, he began his working life in 1930 as a machinist in a cotton plant before becoming a foreman in a silk-spinning factory in Chardzhou.
Education and Technical Expertise
In 1935, Kostandov enrolled at the Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering (MIHM). He graduated in 1940 and worked as an engineer, shop superintendent, chief mechanic, and director of an electrochemical plant in Chirchik, Uzbekistan.
Political Involvement and Chemical Industry Leadership
Kostandov joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1942. From 1953, he headed the Main Administration for Nitrogen Industry within the Soviet Ministry of Chemical Industry. In 1958, he became Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Chemistry of the USSR and First Deputy Chairman in 1961.
Minister of Chemical Industry and Scientific Achievements
On May 11, 1963, Kostandov was appointed Chairman of the State Committee for Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering. He later served as Chairman of the State Committee for Chemical Industry from 1964. In 1965, he became Minister of Chemical Industry of the USSR and held this position until November 4, 1980. As Minister, Kostandov played a significant role in developing the Soviet chemical industry and was recognized as the XXXV Mendeleev Lecturer in 1979.
Political Career and High-Level Appointments
Kostandov was elected as a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1971 and had been a candidate member since 1966. He also served as a deputy of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1966 to 1984. From November 1980, he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR.
Legacy and Recognition
Kostandov's contributions to the chemical industry earned him numerous awards and honors, including three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, two Orders of the Badge of Honor, the Stalin Prize, and the Lenin Prize. In 2007, the "Leonid A. Kostandov Foundation" was established to recognize and support outstanding achievements in chemical engineering and chemical technology.
Kostandov's legacy lives on through the institutions and industries he helped shape. He was laid to rest in the Kremlin Wall on Red Square in Moscow, becoming one of the last individuals to receive this honor.
