Early Life and Military Training

Leonid Mikhailovich Sandalov was born on March 28 (April 10), 1900, in the village of Bisikha, Kostroma Governorate, into a family of weavers. He completed primary school and subsequently worked at a textile factory for several years.

In 1919, at the behest of the Komsomol, Sandalov enrolled in military training courses in Ivanovo-Voznesensk. He went on to serve on the Turkestan and Southern fronts, commanding platoons and companies in the 28th Rifle Division.

Interwar Period

After the end of the Civil War, Sandalov remained in the military, serving in various roles. He graduated from the Kiev United Commanders School in 1926 and held positions as assistant company commander, battery assistant commander, and company commander.

In 1934, he graduated from the M.V. Frunze Military Academy and was appointed chief of staff of the 1st Mechanized Regiment. He later held various staff positions in the Kiev and Belarusian Military Districts, including assistant chief of staff for operations in the Belarusian Military District from 1937 to 1940.

World War II

With the outbreak of World War II, Sandalov initially served as chief of staff of the 4th Army of the Western Front. He briefly served as acting commander of the 4th Army from July 8 to 24, 1941, during which time he halted the army's retreat and established a defensive line near Slavgorod.

Subsequently, he served as chief of staff of the Central Front (July-August 1941), chief of operations of the Bryansk Front (August-October 1941), and chief of staff of the Bryansk Front (October-November 1941).

From November 1941 to September 1942, Sandalov commanded the staff of the 20th Army of the Western Front. He played a crucial role in organizing the formation and military operations of the army, which liberated several towns near Moscow, including Red Polyana and Volokolamsk.

In August 1942, the 20th Army participated in the Pogorelo-Gorodishchenskaya operation, for which Sandalov was awarded the Order of Lenin. He later served as chief of staff of the Bryansk Front (September 1942-October 1943), chief of staff of the 2nd Baltic Front (October 1943-March 1945), chief of staff of the 4th Ukrainian Front (March-May 1945), and chief of staff of the Carpathian Military District (1945-1946).

Post-War Career

From 1946 to 1947, Sandalov served as deputy chief of the Main Staff of the Ground Forces. Subsequently, he held the position of chief of staff and first deputy commander of the Moscow Military District from 1947 to 1953.

In 1951, he survived a plane crash and underwent several surgeries, which left him disabled and unable to walk. He retired from active service in 1955.

Literary and Analytical Contributions

After his retirement, Sandalov devoted himself to writing military memoirs, essays, and articles. He shared his insights and experiences in numerous publications, making significant contributions to the field of military history and analysis.
