Childhood and Early Life
Leonid Fedorovich Sergienko, born in 1950 in Makeyevka, Ukraine, was brought up in a single-parent household. Forced to mature early due to financial constraints, he attended an agricultural college after completing grade 7. He worked on a state farm, served in the army, and began his career as a miner at the "Kholodnaya Balka" mine. Sergienko's youth and most of his adult life was spent at the mine, where he garnered over 25 years of experience. It was only upon retirement that his artistic journey began.
Musical Awakening
Despite his late entry into the music scene, Sergienko possessed an exceptional natural talent. His voice spanned three octaves, encompassing tenor, baritone, and bass. Throngs flocked to his performances, drawn to the powerful timbre that resonated even without amplification. Sergienko's love for music ignited in his youth, and he became a member of the Ukrainian Belcanto School led by Pavel Tyutunnik. Under Tyutunnik's mentorship, he honed his skills and showcased his talent on stage. He even penned the song "Kholodnaya Balka" for Sergienko.
Rise to Stardom
Sergienko's reputation as the "Donbas Caruso" spread beyond his hometown. He performed in Kiev's House of Teachers and other prestigious venues, accompanied by folk artist Svetlana Glukh on piano. Sergienko's prowess earned him the title "Voice of Donbas" in a music competition.
Post-Conflict Life and "The Voice"
Following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, Sergienko remained in Makeyevka and joined the "Miner's Dawn" group. His colleagues encouraged him to participate in the second season of "The Voice: Senior" on Russian television. Despite the grueling 18-hour journey to Moscow, Sergienko's rendition of "Akh Ty, Dushechka" during the blind auditions made him an instant sensation. His voice captivated Pelageya, who coached him, and left fellow mentor Lev Leshchenko marveling at his self-taught abilities.
Personal Life
Sergienko's personal life is guarded, but it is known that he married Valentina Evgenievna and had two sons, one of whom blessed him with a grandson named Nikita.
Ongoing Legacy
Sergienko continues to perform and has become an icon in his homeland. His participation in "The Voice: Senior" bolstered his star status, and his hometown eagerly anticipates his appearances. He remains passionate about folk songs and romances, often drawing inspiration from Ukrainian and Russian poets.
