Biography of Leonid Smetannikov

Leonid Smetannikov is a renowned singer known for his lyrical baritone voice. He was born and raised in the South Ural region of Russia. His early childhood was spent in Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine, where his family moved after the war. Smetannikov's father, Anatoly, had been severely wounded during the war and was in the hospital for a long time before reuniting with the family.

After completing seven years of school, Smetannikov enrolled in an industrial technical school in 1957. He then started working as an electrician at the Dneprodzerzhinsk Metallurgical Plant in 1961. However, his true passion lay in music, and in 1962, he moved to Dnepropetrovsk to attend a music school.

Life was not easy for Smetannikov during his years at the music school. He had to work as a radio operator at the Student Palace of Culture to support himself financially. Despite the challenges, he persevered and focused on developing his voice. He experimented with different vocal ranges, starting with bass and dramatic baritone before settling on a lyrical baritone.

Upon graduating from the music school in 1966, Smetannikov went to Saratov to study at the L.V. Sobinov Saratov State Conservatory. He was mentored by Alexander Bystrov, a renowned teacher who had trained many talented singers. In 1973, Smetannikov's career soared as he became a laureate of several competitions and festivals, including the All-Union Competition of Soviet Song Performers in Minsk, the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin, and the VI All-Union Vocalists Competition named after Glinka in Kishinev.

Throughout his career, Smetannikov has portrayed numerous iconic roles in operas and operettas. Some of his notable performances include Valentin in Gounod's "Faust," Germont in Verdi's "La Traviata," Onegin in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin," Yeletsky in Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades," Figaro in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," and Don Juan in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." He has also excelled in chamber music performances, showcasing his ability to interpret and breathe new life into classical and contemporary compositions.

Over the course of his 25-year career, Smetannikov has performed in over 30 opera roles, participated in hundreds of concerts both domestically and internationally, released five solo albums, appeared in three music films, and made regular appearances on radio and television. His talent has been recognized with prestigious titles, including People's Artist of the USSR and RSFSR, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, and Laureate of the State Prize of the RSFSR named after Glinka. In 1977, Smetannikov was invited to teach at the L.V. Sobinov Saratov State Conservatory, where he became a professor in 1989.
